Before, During & After the Storm

"Before the Storm"

Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes.  Some did not hear the warning while others received the warning but did not believe a tornado would actually affect them.  Being prepared could save your life in the event a tornado threatens our area.  After you have received the warning or observed threatening skies, YOU must make the decision to seek shelter before the storm arrives.  This could be the most important decision you will ever make.

Each family is urged to develop a family disaster plan.

  • Make sure your tetanus shots are up to date.  (Tetanus shots are good for 10 years)
  • Know where family members could gather if a tornado is headed your way.  It could be your basement, a center hallway, bathroom or closet.
  • Go to the closest community shelter.  Galmey Community Bible Church, 3 miles west of the Lake Pomme de Terre dam on Highway 54 in Galmey has a storm shelter for the community to use when this area has storms in the basement (Fellowship Hall).
  • Have a disaster survival kit prepared to take with you to the shelter area.  The Disaster Survival Kit page will give you items to have in your survival kit.
  • Choose an out of state friend or family member as your "family check-in contact" for everyone to call if the family gets separated.
  • Discuss with your family what to do if advised to evacuate.

If you do not have time to arrive safely at the Galmey Church Fellowship Hall/storm shelter, move to a basement, an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and get under a sturdy piece of furniture.  Stay away from windows.

If you are in an automobile, get out.  Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car.   Instead, leave it immediately.  Lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.  Lay face down, protecting your head and neck with your hands and arms.

If you are in a mobile home, even if it is tied down, seek shelter.  Lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area.  Lay face down, protecting your head and neck with your hands and arms.

"During the Storm"

If you are at home:

  • Already be in the storm shelter at the Galmey Church or in your safe area of your home.
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Be under a piece of sturdy furniture such as a workbench, heavy table or desk and hold on to it.

If you are outdoors:

  • If possible, get inside a building.
  • If shelter is not available or there is not time to get to the Galmey Church Fellowship Hall/storm shelter and you do not have time to get inside, lie in a ditch or low-lying area or crouch near a strong building.  Be aware of the potential for flooding.
  • Protect your head and neck with your arms.

If you are in a car:

  • Never try to out drive a tornado in a car or truck.
  • Get out of the car immediately and take shelter in a nearby building.
  • If there is not time to get indoors, get out of the car and lie in a ditch or low-lying area away from the vehicle.  Be aware of the potential for flooding.
  • Cover your head with your arms, coat or blanket to protect your self from flying debris.

"After the Storm"

Watch out for dangers that accompany these storms such as flash floods, lightning, damaging straight-line winds which can reach 140 mph and large hail.  Stay aware of your surroundings.  There are still many new dangers.

  • Watch out for fallen power lines and stay out of the damaged area.
  • Watch for flash flooding.
  • Never drive into water on the road.
  • If your car stalls, get out of your car immediately and seek higher ground.  It takes less than two feet of water to make your car float.
  • Listen to the radio for information and to get the latest emergency instructions.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect for damage.  NEVER use candles at any time.
  • Help injured or trapped persons.
  • Give first aid when appropriate.
  • Don't try to move the seriously injured unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.
  • Call for help.
  • Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
  • Stay out of damaged buildings.  Return home only when authorities say it is safe.
  • Clean up spilled medicines, bleaches, gasoline or other flammable liquids immediately.  Leave the building if you smell gas or chemical fumes.
  • Take pictures of the damage -- both to the house and its contents for insurance purposes.
  • Remember to help your neighbors who may require special assistance - infants, the elderly and people with disabilities.

Remember to say a prayer to our loving God!
