Disaster Supply Kit

Families should be prepared for all hazards that affect their area.  It is suggested you keep enough supplies in your home to meet the needs of your family for at least three days.  We also suggest you assemble a disaster supply kit with items you may need in case of an evacuation.  Store these items in an easy to carry plastic container that you can take to the shelter with you.  A cooler is a good container in case ice would be available after the storm.  The kit could include:

Bottled water (enough for a couple of days for each person)  Replace every six months

Food that won't spoil (jello cups, pudding cups, crackers, energy bars) again enough for a couple of days for each person.  Replace every six months.

Canned food

Can opener - hand style (non electric)

Plastic forks, spoons and knives

First Aid items including prescription medicines  (All first aid items need to be in their orginal containers.)

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Wet Wipes

Battery powered NOAA Weather Radio

Portable radio

Flashlight and plenty of extra batteries

Your Bible, a book or magazine

Copies of very important papers that you will need in case of a disaster

Any special items for an infant, elderly or disabled family member

A small toy, a book or a coloring book and crayolas for the small children

Any item that will help make you more comfortable during your stay at the shelter.  Maybe a pillow would be nice.

When we are having stormy weather it is advisable to have your disaster kit near the door to take with you as you go to a shelter.  Take a blanket or sleeping bag for each family member.  Always make sure you have your ID, a credit card and/or cash in case you aren't able to go back home for a while.

Since pets are not allowed in most shelters please prepare for your pet.  Make sure all family members know of your plans for your pets.

Remember when a tornado is coming, you have only a short amount of time to make a decision.  Your advance planning and quick response are the keys to surviving a tornado.
