History of Galmey Community Bible Church

Old Church in disrepair (1960's)

History of Galmey Community Bible Church

On July 9, 1900 Travis and Mary Moore deeded an acre of land to five men. The five men were J. J. Stults, E. J. Kelly, J. Aspey, O. L. Boardley and Willis Pitts. This land was to be used exclusively for a church or educational building. The deed states, "That should this building ever cease to be used for such purposes, the title to the land must revert to its grantors, heirs or assigns."

Records are not available so we cannot give credit to the people involved, but we must be grateful that God put it upon hearts to see the need for a place of worship to serve future generations.

In 1901 a concrete church was erected. This was a sturdy building with walls two feet thick. A large double front door opened into a spacious foyer. The foyer had entrances on both sides, which opened to the sanctuary. Seats lined both sides of a central aisle. There was a pulpit on a raised platform, together with book stand on which rested a large Bible.

There was no regular pastor some years, but since it was church policy to be open to all Bible believing denominations, several came and held revival meetings from time to time. Souls were won to the Lord and the people held together, keeping a Sunday School alive even when a preacher was not available. A thriving Sunday School was superintended by a Mr. Proctor and on Sunday night a young people's group of about twenty met faithfully.

In 1911, Reverend Helfenstien held a revival meeting and was instrumental in organizing the body of believers as members of the New Light Christian Church, headquartered in Indiana. The membership rapidly reached over 100.

However, the building began to crack and became unsafe for use. Reverend Earnest Jones, a Holiness preacher, was pastoring at that time. He took his congregation to an old Baptist Church near Galmey, where they held services for some time. Then they bought a store building nearby and moved into it. They later sold the store building and in 1922, after removing the concrete church, they built a one room frame building on the same site.

It was in this one room sanctuary that the people of this farming community gathered on Sundays to worship God in their humble, sincere way.

People came to church, by wagon and team, horseback or on foot in those early days. Here their spiritual needs were met. Times were hard, money was scarce, but the faith of the people was strong. It was their custom to have a "protracted" meeting every year. These revival meetings lasted from one week to one month. The house wo0uld be paced to capacity and many precious souls found Jesus as their savior at an old fashioned alter.

In 1929, Reverend Jones moved to Wheatland, Missouri, to pastor the Methodist Church, after seventeen years of ministry at Galmey.

Following Reverend Jones's pastorate, Reverend Thomas Crance accepted the call to take over the pastorate. Reverend Crance had been ordained in 1926. He was very faithful in filling the pulpit on a once a month basis. No salary was set. He was paid by donation only, which usually amounted to about thirty dollars per year. During this time the nation was in an economic depression and money was very tight.

The assessed value of the one room building was a mere $1,000.00. The ladies of the church, which was now known as the Congregational Christian Church, occasionally sold sandwiches, pies and coffee at farm auction sales to help the church finances. Just as God protected and fed the Israelites forty years in the wilderness to fulfill His plan, so He has kept His hand on Galmey Church working out His plan for its future.

Several revivals were held over the years and new converts were won to the Lord. Some of the evangelists were Marion Cowen, Reverend Goodnight, Red Allen, James Wright and others.

In the late fifties, a group of students from Central Bible Institute in Springfield, Missouri came down and held services on the Sundays that Reverend Crance did not come. However, "Brother Thomas", as he was affectionately called, continued to fill the pulpit once each month, he drove from his home in Flemington, Missouri each time.

The years passed and through all this time the church stood as a lighthouse to all who needed help. The community was held together by its ties, even when attendance fell off and some feared that the church might die out. There was a large decreased in population of the following the construction of a Federal Dam across the Pomme de Terre River. Farmers were forced to sell their farms to the U S Government and consequently moved out of the area. Things really got bad after Rev. Crance's retirement. "Brother Thomas" was getting on in years and having served Galmey Church for thirty years, he felt he should retire, since he and his wife were both in less than good health. Church attendance dropped to almost nothing. The building had fallen into a state of disrepair.

A fence was built across the front of the property adjacent to the highway right of way, posing a threat to any continuation of services thee. Things looked black for Galmey Church. Unless the church was being used for Christian services it was feared that the land would revert back to the original tract from which it came. Due to the faith and strong conviction of some farsighted ones in the community, interest was created in repairing the old building. After determining that the fence was illegal, it was removed. An appeal was made for financial assistance.

Money began to come in, not only from members but also from former members. In 1967-1968, the building was rejuvenated and saved from utter ruin by donations of both money and manual labor.

God always has His faithful ones who come forth in an emergency. Once more the building was ready for use. The building was repaired and ready for worship.

The community hoped, prayed and trusted God to find a way. But even an empty small church can be used by God, if the need arises. On Sunday morning, Wesley Dorman noticed a car parked in front of the church for an unusual length of time. Thinking it best to check against foul play Wesley went up to investigate. As he stepped in the door, he heard a man praying aloud and saw that a woman and some children were seated around him. Feeling like an intruder, Wesley quietly took a seat near the door. After prayer, they read a few Scriptures and the man spoke a few words of praise and worship to God. They again prayed and then made their way to the door. Wesley introduced himself to them and they identified themselves. They were just a Christian family passing by and seeing the house of God, went in. Since there was no one there, they conducted their own private serves to fulfill their duty to God on the Lord's Day.

So once again Galmey Church ad fulfilled its mission as an open door church.

There were still no regular services held at first, but as the Pomme de Terre Dam had been completed in 1961, there was a real need for a place of worship for the retired people moving in. The empty building was a mutual concern of the community. The population was still sparse, but in July of 1972 some ladies of the community, with help from the ladies of Weaubleau Baptist Church, held a week of Vacation Bible School. During this week, nightly revival meetings were held, conducted by Reverend Gene Roberts of the Weaubleau Church.

Much good came from the efforts of these people and following the revival, about 20 people of the Galmey community met at nine o'clock each Sunday morning for classes. For more than a year these classes were held.

A youth group was organized under the leadership of Roberta Fritz and Nylene Terry. Again, there was concern over the lack of a minister to conduct worship service, however, it was the desire of the people to have regular weekly Sunday morning worship services, Sunday School and evening youth group activities.

In August 1973, it was learned that a young man by the name of Ed Voskuhl, who had recently surrendered to the call from God to preach the Gospel of Christ, was available on a part time basis. He was contacted and on September 2, 1973 he came and preached a trial message, returning again on September 9, 1973.

In October, a youth revival was held by a group from Southwest Bible College in Bolivar, Missouri. It was very successful and following this, Reverend Voskuhl was called to fill the pulpit each Sunday morning.

The congregation went ahead with plans to incorporate as an interdenominational church and applied for a charter.

Officers elected at that time were Melvin Terry, chairman; Dave Fritz, vice chairman; Lillia Dorman, secretary-treasurer. By September 13, 1973, there were thirteen members taken in. They were Lucile Dorman, Wesley Dorman, David Fritz, Roberta Fritz, Lucille Quick, Albert Quick, Melvin Terry, Nylene Terry, Martha Pauline, Ruth Ann Tucci, Ed Voskuhl, Reba Voskuhl and Bentley G. Dorman. The church became officially incorporation November 5, 1973 and the first business meeting was held the next day, November 6, 1973.

Tentative plans to add Sunday School rooms to the one room sanctuary became reality when Mrs. Alice Spencer offered to loan the church $1,000.00 to add to the existing funds to get the work started.

Work was started immediately and by spring there were three new classrooms, kitchen facilities and restrooms, as God continued to bless.

A well was drilled on the line between the church and the Donald Hunt property. Mr. Hunt agreed to pay for the drilling and the church as to pay for the pump, pressure tank and the cost of a small building to house these facilities. All repairs on the pump and well were shared equally, with an agreement being signed by both parties.

Church attendance grew quite rapidly and long range plans for even more rooms were discussed. At a business meeting on May 7, 1974, it was voted to have a five-member board.

These five were Melvin Terry, Bennie Dorman, Paul Munden, Charles Fuller and Dave Fritz, treasurer. Roberta Fritz with Nylene Terry was to act as secretary. These were installed July 1, 1974.

A weekly prayer service was added to the schedule, as was a monthly Holy Communion service, which was held for the first time on May 1, 1974, during Reverend Voskuhl's ministry.

Also, during Reverend Voskuhl's ministry an annual communion service was held on Christmas Eve, in memory of Christ's birthday.

On August 12, 1975, the Church bought from Ed Voskuhl the mobile home which he and his wife, Reba, had moved onto the church property. It remained the parsonage for them until the end of their ministry at Galmey Church.

Several "first" have taken place since the church incorporated. The first wedding united Kenny Steward and Cathy Nelson on November 23, 1993.

The first baptismal service was held at Galmey Cove with Lucile Dorman and son, Bennie G. Dorman. Many others have since followed them.

In 1975, Lisa Hart was sent to church camp and a Memorial Fund was set up with Maude S Toy Knight as first name in the book.

In 1977, the first Sunrise Service was held on Easter Sunday. The first Sunday night service was held on April 3, 1977 with 122 in attendance. Reverend Voskuhl was hired full time and a Missionary Circle was established in December 1977.

The note to Mrs. Alice Spencer was paid off. A building fund, which had been set up in November 1973 had grown so plans for a new sanctuary, to accommodate the growing congregation was considered by the building committee. Concrete for the floor of the sanctuary was poured in October of 1977 so in January of 1978, construction of the building began and by spring the new auditorium was ready for occupancy.

Under the concrete sidewalk on the north side, near the front entrance, Wesley Dorman, Dave Fritz, Wayne Toy and Reverend Voskuhl buried a waterproof, fireproof metal box. The box contained a King James Bible, a copy of the Statement of Faith, a membership list, the corporation papers and copy of the church history.

By using the existing chairs, the first service in the new sanctuary was held on Easter Sunday, March 19, 1978, with a happy, thankful congregation and several well wishers.

On May 21, 1978, a service was held to dedicate the sanctuary to the Lord. Many friends came to rejoice with the membership that Sunday afternoon. With thankful hearts they paid homage to God for what He had done in the past and with faith they looked forward to great accomplishments in the future with the help of God and His glory.

In July of 1978 Reverend Ed Voskuhl resigned his ministry at Galmey Church. He felt the need for more schooling and a desire to be an evangelist. The congregation was now faced with the problem of replacing him.

Following five months of supply preachers, headed by Interim Minister, Dr. G H Surrette of Southwest Baptist College, the pulpit committee brought another young preacher, Richard Jenkins, also from Southwest Baptist College, to the Board of Directors and the congregation voted to hire him. He began his ministry at Galmey Church in December 1978.

In June 1979, a note burning service was held, celebrating the church's debt free status. In June 1979, it was voted to have a seven-man board for better representation. These men were Leonard Thomas, Clyde Thomas, Wesley Dorman, Jim Alexander, Ed Phillips, Don Payne and Kenny Stewart.

Then in July 1979, pews were put in the sanctuary, choir chairs were installed, as well as two prayer benches.

After a short ministry of about a year, Pastor Richard Jenkins resigned his pastorate to pursue his education and possibly go into a singing ministry as he had an exceptionally good voice.

Again, Dr. Surrett took over as interim pastor. A number of supply pastors were heard and candidates tried. In September of 1980, Reverend Don DeMonbrun from DesMoines, Iowa was hired.

During the ensuing months several important things were accomplished. The church adopted a constitution and by-laws to govern the church. The fiscal year of the church was changed to run from January 1 to December 31 to comform to bank, business and individual tax year. A board of Elders was voted in consisting of the following men: Don Payne, chairman; Wesley Dorman, Jim Alexander, Kenny Stewart and Ed Phillips and the following deacons were also elected: George Williams, Don Finley and "Sully" Sullivan. The board of elders replaced the old seven-member board of directors.

Ed Phillips took over the treasurer-ship of the church, relieving Dave Fritz who had been treasurer for seven years.

The Vacation Bible School was very successful in 1981.

The Mission Circle made many things to to send to the Flagstaff Mission for the Navajo Indians in Arizona. The Mission Circle helps in home missions by providing aid to the needy and the burnout victims. They also sent gifts of foodsuffs and personal items to the missionaries overseas. One day a month they would go to the Urbana Nursing Home to fellowship and sing for the people living there.

The church is contributing to the financial support of four missionaries, those overseas and a Jewish ministry in the United States.

In the fall of 1981 the congregation began discussing the need for additional space. To be included would be a Fellowship hall and recreation center, new kitchen, enlarge the restroom facilities, a library, pastor's study and multi-purpose room. Part of the present facility would be remodeled for the Sunday School classrooms. In September of 1981 the congregation approved the project and in May of 1982 the work began. The facility was completed as the cash came in, trusting God to supply the need.

After ground breaking in the spring of 1982 the Fellowship Hall continually took shape. Members of the congregation who donated their labor did much of the work and the major construction at that time was under contractor, John Edge.

The first annual Missionary Conference was held in October 1982 with four missionaries sharing their fields and burdens during the four days of conference.

In November 1982, the parking lot in front of the church was graded and gravel added, resulting in much improvement. A new sidewalk was poured in December 1982 and framework was started on the East end of what was to be the Fellowship Hall when completed. By the last of March 1983, most of the rough in work was finished and pillars were added to the front porch on the front of the new addition and we are thankful to God for sending in the money. Much work was accomplished during the ensuing months on the inside of the building and hearts were encouraged. Work on the church continued and every Friday several men came in and worked at painting, paneling, plumbing, wiring and etc. The ladies would prepare and serve a "potluck" meal. It was work, fun and fellowship for all, resulting in much progress toward the goal of remodeling the existing facilities and doing the finish works in the Fellowship Hall.

Vacation Bible School in June, 1983 was again a successful with several special blessings.

At a special meeting in August 1983, after much thought and prayer for guidance, the congregation voted to change the name of the church to Galmey Community Bible Church. The following is a paragraph from the minutes of the Board of Elders meeting on July 14, 1983.

"There was considerable discussion about the need for a name change for the church to clear up the confusion in the minds of many about the meaning of interdenominational. A motion by Clyde Thomas, second by Wesley Dorman that we recommend to the congregation that we change the name of the church to Galmey Community Bible Church." Carried.

What the new name should tell the community and those visiting: Galmey:  That is the location of our fellowship.

Community:  Anyone who resides in or visits this community is welcome to be part of our services.  Everyone, regardless of background is welcome.  We are not associated with any denomination.

Bible:  This is the standard upon which the church teaches and if any person attends they wil expect to learn from the Bible.

Church:  A group of people who belong to the Lord Jesus Christ and claim Him as Lord and Saviour.

Two events in October were highlight for our fellowship. An all-church campout was an exciting two-day event that proved to be a Spiritual treat to over 60 people who attended.

The Second annual Missionary Conference was a spiritual challenge and a time of growing for our people. We learned about new Mission fields and discovered the Faith Promise way of supporting our missionaries.

It was felt that 1983 was a very successful year, both in spiritual growth and in the progress of the building program. God certainly supplied every need!  The year was closed with a Watch Night Party on December 31.

On January 29, 1984 the Fifth Sunday Sing was presented by Donald Burnett and Group. It was an enjoyable program of Gospel Music and testimony.

The first issue of Galmey Gospel came out in February 1984. This was a flier who finds its way into home of Hickory County by mail and its purpose was to reach families with the Gospel of Christ in an interesting and informative way.

Two new Sunday School classes were formed in February 1984, namely "Teen Agers" and "Young Adults".

On April 15, 1984 our choir of 27 voices under the direction of Mrs. Larry Fullmer presented the inspiring Cantata, "He Lives".

June was Vacation Bible School month.  96 children were enrolled.

Although, Galmey Church as been contributing to the support of five different missionary efforts for several years, none of these are actually from our church. Therefore, it was joy and thanksgiving to God when on August 19, 1984 that Patricia DeMonbrun was commissioned by Reverand DeMonbrun and Elders John Green, Lee McAlister and Jim Alexander, to become our first missionary sent out. She went to Galmi, Niger West Africa. She served the mission field as part of a medical team in the Galmi Hospital. She held a B.S. in missionary nursing.

Galmey Church took on a new ministry, a Sunday afternoon service at the Hermitage Park Care Center. There was visiting, singing and a message from God's Word.

September 1, 1984 air conditioning was installed in the Fellowship Hall. On September 2 there was a "Hobo Dinner" in the Fellowship Hall after the morning worship service.

October 5 and 6, 1984 was the annual Church Campout at the Wheatland Public Use Area on Pomme de Terre Lake.

The third annual Missionary Conference began on October 28, 1984 and continued through October 31. Each of the three missionaries shared about their involvement in their specific work. Edwin Hodges, vice president of Bibles for the World, inspired several of our people to take a number of Bibles to mail to different countries. Avner Boskey, a Christian Jew, spoke on Bible Prophecy and the part Jews play in the world's ministry. He was with Ariel Ministries. Gene Soderberg is Mid-West Church Ministries Co-ordinator for Navigators. These conferences do much to make us aware of the need of Missionary Work around the world and at home.

The Galmey Missions Circle, which meets twice a month to fellowship and work with their hands to help Missionaries we now support. Many articles of clothing were sent to the Navajos via Flagstaff Mission in Arizona to be disbursed to the Indians of the area, as well as warm quilts and other items the women make. Toys, toilet articles and other miscellaneous items are mailed to the Mission at Christmas. The ladies also make gift items for Nursing Home residents and provide treats for them on a monthly basis as well as helping burned out victims of the area in their time of need. A Missionary Chest is kept supplied with quilts, towels and toiletry articles and each missionary family who visits our church has access to this chest.

Easter Sunrise Service was held on April 7, 1985 at the Corps of Engineers Shelter Area.

For several years thee had been a growing desire for the church building to be identified as a church with the addition of a steeple. Through a special gift of the Lord donated by Dale & Esther Kelley the desire became a reality. The steeple was delivered in Late July 1985. A crew of men from the church soon had it installed, with a cross on top. This cross serves as a reminder to all who pass by that it is only because of Jesus Christ that we have a way to God. Our church stands on the Scripture where Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life¡" John 14:6.

In September 1985, a commercial range and exhaust system was installed in the kitchen. This was a gift from Roberta Fritz family in her memory.

September 29, 1985 the 5th Sunday Sing featured the Crumpleys, an exciting group singing Gospel Songs and giving personal testimonies to the Glory of God.

The Fourth Annual Missionary Conference was held October 6 through 9, featuring a team from Christian Communications of Wichita, Kansas. Dr. Hart Armstrong, president of Christian Communications, is a writer and editor and former missionary overseas, having been in the Holy Land 28 times. His messages were very inspiring each night.

There was an overflow crowd at the Missions Banquet on October 9. Dr. Armstrong spoke on prophecy. It was a very successful conference, bringing to mind the faithfulness of our Missionaries in spreading the Gospel in different areas of the world where God has sent them.

At the yearly congregation business meeting in November 1985, the congregation voted in as Elders, Dale Kelley, Jim Hollender, Francis Craig, Alvin Miner and Henry Stolte.  Deacons were Alfred Craig, Mike Fortsch, Paul Munden and George Williams.

September 14, 1986 Jane and Ed Skowron visited our church and told of their calling to the Mission field and how God is working in their lives. They were on their way to Panama to plant churches and win souls for God. They were presented with a money tree.

Sunday, October 12, 1986 was a great day of blessing for Galmey Church as they celebrated the completion of the building program. There was an open house and members and visitors toured the now completed building. They were blessed with a demonstration of the Jewish Passover, brought to us by Dan Rigney of Ariel Ministries, of Baltimore, Maryland. It was a beautiful demonstration of the elaborate ritual the Jews had to perform, to commemorate their deliverance from bondage to Egypt. It was an example of and forerunner of our Holy Communion, reminding all to be thankful for the freedom we can have in our lives today through the power of Jesus' blood applied to our hearts, as we accept Him as our Savoir, Redeemer. Music was enjoyed in the Fellowship Hall with the Ozark Mountain Family Band and The Images of Christ Gospel Singing Group from Calvary Bible College entertained in the sanctuary.
